College move-in is coming up for a new batch of freshmen here in Maryland! If you're one of them, you're probably bursting with excitement as you prepare to move into your first dorm and make the space your own. But everyone knows that dorms tend to be tight quarters, and it's important to make the use of all of your space. We've got tips! Read on.
1. First things first: don't overpack. You will probably not actually need everything you think you do, and that waffle maker or yoga mat may just end up taking up valuable space. Take what you know for sure you'll need, and you can always buy more or pick things up at home later.
2. Bring plenty of trash bags on move-in day. They'll come in handy when you're opening up packaging, cardboard, plastic, etc. -- you don't want to trash your dorm on the very first day.
3. Get more space under your bed by getting bed risers. If you don't have the option to loft your bed, this is a great way to at least get things like suitcases, storage containers and shoeboxes stored out of sight.
4. Stick-on wallpaper can liven up those boring concrete walls! You'll be able to express a little more of your personality, and you can peel it off when the year's up. Just be sure to invest in a brand with good reviews that, you know, actually comes off.
5. Opt for a laundry basket with wheels. If the laundry room is at the end of the hall, or worse, on a different floor, you won't be very motivated to do any laundry when you have to lug a big bag on your shoulder. A rolling one is much easier.
6. Invest in a rolling cart! This is a good way to store things that you use regularly but need to put away, like snacks, books, and video games.
7. Skip the plastic shower caddy and go with a mesh one instead. This will prevent shower water from sitting around on your bath stuff and will dry much more quickly.
8. An electric kettle is a great investment. It's not just great for making tea; you can use it for ramen, hot chocolate, instant coffee, mac and cheese...the list goes on.
9. Everyone likes visiting the dorm room where the occupants have fun games to play. Stock up on party favorites or teach your fellow residents how to play a new one.
10. Skip the iron -- we know you're not actually going to use it, and it'll take up space you just don't have. Instead, bring plenty of wrinkle release spray. For stubborn wrinkles, a short run through the dryer or some time near a hot steamy shower will do.
