The Annapolis and Elk Ridge Railroad was one of the nation’s earliest railroads. It was charted to build a line that would connect the state capital of Annapolis with the Washington Branch of the B&O Railroad. Although this diminutive railroad would never exceed its original track bed of 20 miles it would have its moment in history. During the first month of the Civil War it provided the only means of supplying troops from the North to defend the Nation’s capital. At later dates both Presidents Lincoln and Grant rode on its trains. This is the story of the A&ERRR before, during, and after the Civil War.
