The holidays are in full swing, and that means it's time to pick out the perfect tree! If you've never chosen your own tree, you may not realize that there's a lot to consider. We've got a guide to help you pick the perfect Christmas tree this year.
If you're after a live tree, visiting a Christmas tree farm may be your best bet -- and there are plenty of those here in Maryland! Check out this list that breaks them down by county.
Before you go anywhere, though, you'll need to measure your space and your tree topper! You don't want to pick a tree that fits perfectly in your living room or den only for it to not have room for the star or angel that goes on top. Know your measurements and stick to them when you go shopping. You'll also want to know how much width you're working with so you have plenty of room for presents.
You'll want one that's nice and even, with branches that aren't broken or squished. It should be nice and hydrated, with a deep green color. If it's starting to look brown, it hasn't had enough to drink.
Give your potential tree a shake. Do needles fall off in clumps? It's normal for the tree to lose a few, but if many of them are falling, move on. The needles should have a nice scent, too, and the branches should be strong enough to hold bulbs and ornaments without buckling or breaking.
Finally, ensure your tree's trunk has a stand that fits it well! You don't want it to tip over or not fit in the stand at all. You'll also want to pick a tree that you can secure safely to your car, so don't choose something bigger than you can get home, even if it'll fit in your house.
Once it's home, it's time to decorate! Just be sure that you keep it away from your fireplace or vents -- you don't want it getting too hot or dry. Keep it watered and it'll last throughout the season.
