Happy July 4, Marylanders! Today's a great day to relax and unwind outside with a cold drink and a hot dog, but that's not the only thing you can do to celebrate today. If you're ready to try something new this July 4, we've got a list of ideas that you can use to make the most of this holiday.
1. Register to vote
Okay, it might not be that much fun to fill out paperwork, but if you're of age and you're not yet registered, it's one of the most patriotic things you can do. New to the process? The Maryland State Board of Elections can help you here.
2.Learn a new recipe
No one's going to argue with the good old burgers and dogs on the grill, but why not impress your friends and family with a cool new recipe? Dish out a side that'll be more exciting than just coleslaw or corn on the cob, or create a super patriotic cake!
3. Learn some local history
Maryland played a lot of different important roles in the history of our country. Did you know Baltimore was the place where President Lincoln disguised himself from possible assassins on his way to his inauguration? Or that some of the most important battles of the Civil War were fought here in Maryland? Maybe you didn't realize that Maryland was one of the original 13 colonies. There's a ton of history here, and you don't have to look too hard to find it.
4. Find a volunteer opportunity
One of the greatest things you can do for your state is find a way to keep it safe, beautiful, and thriving! Before you head to that cookout, head online and look up a local charity or project that could use your brains and talents.
5. Live in the moment
After you've found that perfect volunteer spot, put away your phone and enjoy the 4th with the people you love! Maybe it's a huge group or just one person; what matters most is that you're engaging with people in your life in an authentic way. You could definitely use some unplugged time!
