It's one of the most magical times of the year here in Maryland -- that's right, the Renaissance Festival is back! If you've never been but have always been curious (or if you went as a kid and barely remember), you might be a little overwhelmed by the scope and size of this operation. After all, it's pretty large (27 acres, to be exact). Here's what you should know.
First of all, wearing a costume is a lot of fun, but it's definitely not mandatory. People show up in all kinds of outfits, from stunningly realistic medieval garb to fantasy cosplay to T-shirts and jeans. If you're thinking about dressing up but don't want to lug a whole costume around, costumes for adults and children alike can be rented for 15-30 dollars a pop.
Tickets need to be purchased online, and the festival is on rain or shine, running on the weekends from August 24 to October 20. You can bring in a sealed water bottle and food, but no other beverages, personal water bottles, or coolers can come in. Don't worry, friends. You will definitely not go hungry or thirsty! You can get traditional Ren-Faire foods like turkey legs, soups, and Scotch eggs, but let's keep in mind that this is Maryland. You'll be able to find crab pretzel, crab rangoon, crab cake sandwiches, and plenty of other goodies.
Once you're fed, it's time to go shopping. Up and down the many lanes and avenues of Revel Grove, there are plenty of artisans and vendors who are crafting jewelry, leather goods, pottery, and even furniture! You can have your fortune told, your face painted, and your hair braided, too.
Of course, you don't have to spend a lot of money to have fun at the festival. In fact, there's a show going on at nearly every single minute of the day -- think singers, harpers, whip performers, acrobats, drummers, dancers, and actors aplenty. But if you really want to see a show, head to the jousting arena, where you'll see Maryland's state sport in play. Will your favorite knight win?
It's hard to think of a place with more to offer than the Maryland Renaissance Festival, and we know you'll have an amazing time. So let us know in the comments -- will you be there this year?
